Niantic are empowering creators to seamlessly and realistically bring virtual content and experiences into the real world, today. Niantic Lightship supports hundreds of millions of users through a client platform that sets and standard for AR, using segmented semantics, mapping, and multiplayer. As part of Niantic's long term vision for Lightship ARDK, they are building a 3D map of the world using Visual Positioning System (VPS) and advanced tools to power totally new types of contextual content at a global scale.
With Trigger, I've been exploring a depth and breadth of creative possibilities and use-cases that this technology can support in all it's combinations - with a particular focus on how brands can leverage the real world to bring new engagement opportunities to their audiences - in the "real-world Metaverse".
From late 2020 and throughout 2021, we developed hundreds of on-paper concepts that were explored with Niantic and multiple brands. Most of these were with an aim of further exploration through prototypes and concept validation before launching them into the public domain. These concepts covered verticals including sports and fan engagement, retail, environmental activism, kids' sports leagues, art and education.
Though virtually all work is currently underwraps until new AR product launches in early 2022 [late 2021 at time of writing], "PLANETARY", one of the demos we developed, is indicative of the types of play-prototypes we've been exploring that use this unique tech stack. Examples like this can inspire multiplayer gaming, creativity, or on-location brand activations where users have to work together to achieve certain outcomes and rewards - emphasizing social participation.
